Finally, that post I’ve been promising with pictures of our New York trip. I’ll try not to bore you with too much verbosity and just stick to the facts.

First off, Broadway. Our hotel was actually on Broadway, on the same block as the Ed Sullivan Theater, so this was pretty much what we saw when we stepped out of the hotel:

We went to the top floor of Rockefeller Center, which was expensive, but totally worth it for the view:

From there we walked to Grand Central Station. We weren’t going anywhere, we just wanted to see it:

We rode the Staten Island Ferry at night, which was really fun. The view was great, but it was wicked cold and windy. We took pictures, but because of the dark and the wind, most of them came out like this:

We decided to ride the Ferry again the next day while the sun was still out, and we got some much better pictures:

This was as close as we got to Lady Liberty:

One day it snowed so we walked through Central Park while the ground was covered in white:

That’s right, I am FINALLY getting around to uploading pictures of food from my trip to NYC. Since there are so many pictures total, I’ve decided to do all of the food photos in one post, and the non-food photos in another post.

Wednesday

I didn’t think to snap a photo of the oatmeal I ate before I left, but it’s sort of irrelevant because this is really only about the food that I ate while I was gone, anyway. I packed a lunch to take with me on the plane, because we would still be traveling over lunchtime and I am never one to miss a meal.

It’s not a pretty picture, but below was my ‘airplane food’. A mock chicken salad sandwich with potato chips, a fruit leather and some yummy biscuits they gave out on the plane which happened to be vegan! Score.

For dinner we went to Better Burger. It was just okay. I liked that they offered a Veggie Burger and a Soy Burger, both of which were vegan. I went with the Soy Burger with vegan cheese. It was poorly put together and difficult to eat, but it wasn’t terrible. I almost went with a soy hot dog, and I kind of wished I had – if only for the fact that it was cheaper.

This burger cost $5.99 and the baked fries were another $2.75. I probably wouldn’t go there again.

Later that evening we took a trip to the Tribeca Whole Foods. I was kind of in love with the huge salt selection (and I bought some black salt! Woo!).

Here I am holding my first ever bag of Tings! I had to finish the whole bag before the end of our trip because, you know, I didn’t have room in my luggage to bring it back. Yeah.

And probably my favorite find of the trip – a Sweet & Sara Smores.

Thursday

Thursday morning we went to Westerly Natural Market, which was just around the corner from our hotel. I bought a pre-made sandwich which was supposedly mock tuna salad. It was pretty good, although a little weird. Nice to be able to pick up a pre-made vegan sandwich though.

I also bought a tofu blueberry knish, which was pretty damn tasty. All together it was an odd breakfast, I know, but I was really hungry from all the walking the day before and it fit the bill very nicely.

For lunch we went to Atlas Cafe (sorry, no website). I got a latte and the Vegan Philly Steak sandwich. It was SPICY and good. The cafe is tiny and poorly lit, so sorry about the crappy picture. I really liked this place and would have gone back for sure if we’d stayed in town longer.

For dinner we went to a vegetarian Thai place called Pukk. I got the ‘Triple Crispy’. It was yum, but again the lighting was terrible so you’ll have to excuse the bad picture.

Friday

Breakfast consisted of a soy latte from Starbucks and a vegan blueberry muffin from Whole Foods (it got a little smooshed in my bag, but it was still tasty!).

After this super-early breakfast we went to The Today Show to try and get on TV. I won’t go into all the painful detail, I’ll just leave it at us spending two hours in -4 degree weather, without it being worth it in the end. Whatever.

Everything was okay again once we got to Teany. It was cold and overcast all morning, but as soon as we stepped through the door and walked down the steps into this cozy little cafe, the sun came out and shone through the window we were sitting by. It was literally like a little oasis of warmth and calm after a day of cold and chaos.

I ordered a pot of juniper berry and red currant tea (number 51) and a vegan BLT.

The tea was awesome, and they had agave nectar and soy milk on the condiment bar!

The BLT was seriously awesome, it had LOTS of lettuce and tomato and Vegenaise, just the way I like it.

After my sandwich I got a slice of carrot cake (all of their desserts are vegan – awesome, right?). It was wonderful, but I totally forgot to get a picture. You’ll just have to take my word for it.

Teany was honestly my favorite eatery we went to on the whole trip. I wish I lived in Manhattan just so I could be a regular there.

Saturday

Our last day in NYC, we decided to go out for brunch before heading to Penn Station to catch the train back to Newark Airport. We went to Counter Vegetarian Bistro, which I’d read had a great veggie brunch. And they did.

The Brit got a mimosa with his brunch:

I ordered what I thought would be just regular old hot chocolate. The options were a ‘shot’ and a ‘bowl’. A word to the wise: order the shot. This stuff is good, but it’s like drinking chocolate soup. I literally ate it with my spoon. It was awesome though, it tasted like it had a little kick of cayenne.

For my meal I ordered the French Toast. Holy shit, this stuff was awesome. I was definitely on a sugar high by the end of the meal, but it was worth every bite.

Back at the airport, we opted for one last meal before boarding the first flight back home. I got some penne with marinara, which was mediocre but filling.

And as a treat after that so-so meal, I ate the Peanut Butter Smores that I had been saving. It was good, and usually I’m of the opinion that everything is better with peanut butter, but surprisingly I didn’t like it as much as the original. It was still pretty awesome though.
