I want to ride my bicycle

Monday, June 1st, 2009

I don’t have a lot to share with you today, but I promise my next post will include a picture of a cake I recently made. I haven’t been taking a lot of pictures lately, but I have been making lots of yummy food! I’ll try to get back into the habit of snapping pics before I eat. In the meantime, here’s a bad picture of an awesome meal:

They may look blurry, but they tasted awesome

They may look blurry, but they tasted awesome

DEOTS Tempeh Wingz served up with roasted baby red potatoes and roasted broccoli, both from the Farmers’ Market. The Brit wouldn’t touch the broccoli, so I may have eaten the entire head myself.

In other news, I kicked the ass of my May cycling goal, finally coming in at 133.16 miles for the month, with my longest ride being 13.22 miles. My new goal for June is 150 miles, with the additional goal of cycling 15 miles in one ride. I’ve already gone 11.2 miles today, so I’m off to a good start!

Books, vegetables and burek

No pictures of the cake yet - that’s next post, I promise.

I went to the Central Library’s book sale a week ago Friday and picked up some cool books. My favorite is the 1951 edition of Better Homes and Gardens Cook Book, in practically perfect condition! I also got Feasting on Raw Foods, The Southern Heritage Cakes Cookbook, The Vegetarian Epicure (book two), The Complete Book of Pasta and the Dictionary of Gastronomy. All six books only cost me $9:

The next day my friend Ahnah and I went to the Farmer’s Market, which was pretty awesome. I got red potatoes:

Fresh basil:

Dwarf kale:

Zucchini:

Yellow squash:

And purple cauliflower:

Here is a shot of everything together, except for the red potatoes and one bunch of kale, which had already been eaten:

I made a vegan version of burek last week. I have never had real burek, so I don’t know how accurate this is, but it tasted pretty awesome. It’s basically ground ‘meat’ crumbles, onion and spices, sauteed and wrapped in puff pastry, rolled up and brushed with margarine then baked. I ate it with Tofutti sour cream, and it was really good. The Brit even liked it. A lot. (sorry for the crappy picture):

Here’s an inside shot, served up with the red potatoes and some kale from the Farmer’s Market:

The next day I had the leftovers with more garlicky kale, and some mashed purple cauliflower (so good!):

Wedding cake pictures coming soon!

Floored

We are not finished. We got most of the way through one room and realized that our A/C is not working. Then we realized it is leaking… again… which is how the old carpet got ruined in the first place.

Let’s talk about something else, shall we? Like food!

This is possibly the best sandwich ever:

Tofurky brand Cranberry & Stuffing deli slices with Vegenaise, cranberry sauce and lettuce on whole grain bread. I thought it was definitely the best sandwich ever until someone on the PPK Forums suggested Tofutti cream cheese instead of Vegenaise (freakin’ brilliant). I will have to try that and get back to you.

The Brit and I stopped in at a small farmer’s market earlier to see what they had. There wasn’t much yet - it’s still early - but there were strawberries! We bought a quart for $3.75, but the guy put a huge handful extra into the bag… bonus!

It was a gorgeous day, so we took them to Starbucks and sat outside drinking coffee and eating strawberries.

And finally, the wonderful Bianca of Vegan Crunk passed on the E for Excellent award to me:

Which is pretty much awesome - thank you! I feel kind of guilty because I’ve been a pretty crappy blogger the last couple of weeks, but hopefully this will inspire me to do a better job. I just want to thank Bianca because her blog is about as awesome as it gets, so it’s a big deal to get this from her!

If I could, I would pass this right back to Bianca, but I don’t think that’s in the rules. Either way, I would like to pass it on to:

The lovely VeganCowGirl
AND
My girl Cardiogirl

Also, I have insomnia. Like, bad.
