Here’s a quick run-down of my life since my last update:
Sunday, August 3rd, I attended a total health seminar which was pretty awesome. Vaughan payed me to make vegan food for about 20 people. I made spicy tempeh sushi, mushroom walnut pâté with crostini, hummus with bell peppers, mango summer rolls with peanut dipping sauce and pistachio sesame halvah cookies. I took pictures, but they’re gone (see below).
Tuesday, August 5th, my hard drive crashed, and I lost everything on my computer. All of my emails, my photos, my sketches, my templates… everything. I had a not-too-recent backup of my contracts and cake outlines which has literally saved my ass. I have learned a very valuable lesson about backing up.
Wednesday, August 6th, I contacted the Apple Store for an appointment with their “Genius Bar”. I was told it would be a week before I could get an appointment. Great.
Friday, August 8th, I spent the day making icing and 100+ orange and black fondant flowers.
Saturday, August 9th, I made, decorated and delivered 100 vegan cupcakes for a wedding downtown (pictures to come). The Brit’s uncle died.
Monday, August 11th, The Brit booked a plane ticket to England so he can attend his uncle’s funeral. He will leave on the 17th and return on September 1st.
Wednesday, August 13th, I made a shit-ton of vegan food for a catering job thanks to Vaughan. It was for the Memphis Chamber of Commerce and fed 40 people. I don’t have any pictures, but I made spicy tempeh sushi rolls, four types of canapés, mushroom walnut pâté in pastry shells, pistachio sesame halvah cookies and chocolate peanut butter no-bake cookies.
The Brit took my computer to its appointment with the “Genius Bar” at the Apple Store, and was told that they would have to send it off for the hard drive replacement and it would take 7-10 days. He said no thanks, and also fuck you for not being willing to tell us that a week ago, instead of insisting on us showing up to some stupid appointment with your ”Genius Bar” just to be told they would have to send it off. Some geniuses they are if they can’t even switch out a fucking hard drive in store.
Thursday, August 14th, I made 10 spicy tempeh sushi rolls for someone I met through Vaughan. He’s getting me a lot of catering work these days. We took my computer to a friend of the family who is an independent Mac consultant, who we should have gone to in the first place but we didn’t realize he was licensed to do warranty work. He told me he would have it ready by the next day.
Friday, August 15th, my computer was ready and I was finally able to reconnect with the rest of the world.
Tomorrow, August 17th, The Brit will leave for England and won’t be back for two weeks.
The End.

I’m so sorry to hear about your hard drive crashing. That’s one of my greatest fears. Damn these modern conveniences!
Wow – what a time of it you’ve had – sending you massive “chill” energy so you can relax a bit. Poor thing. Sorry about your computer trouble. Doesn’t that just bite. And I hate it when they keep this “mystique” about fixing things which is one of the reasons I learned how to take care of my own computers many years ago. I’m sure it is more complicated with a MAC though – well maybe not complicated but I don’t know anything about them.
I back up everything on my external Terabyte drive. They are cheap now and portable. You can also use file saving online – my host offers it and it is great.
Sorry to hear about the Brit’s Uncle. Sad time.
I’m sorry you’ve had such a horrible couple of weeks. Sometimes, the world seems to be against ourselves, doesn’t it? Hang in there!
Hey
sorry to hear about the Brit’s uncle, and I am also sorry that Apple dinked you around so much. I always have nice little arts and crafts style notions about apple, and than I remember that they are a corporation. bastards.
The sushi rolls sound great…Good luck with the next little bit. You sound busy and stressed…be well!
Glad to hear about all your catering work (awesome!), but sorry to hear about your computer and the Brit’s uncle.
I’ve never had a good time at the Genius Bar. A little too pretentious sometimes….
OH NO! I am so sorry for all that you have lost off your computer, especially the photos. The family friend could not retrieve them somehow? At least all those catering jobs kept you occupied while you were without internet. I am suddenly starving after reading your post. and by the way, I MISSED YOU!
Damn, I had wondered what happened to you! That sucks about your computer. I’ve been thinking about that lately. I need to back up my recipes for the cookbook. They’re all saved to a hard drive, but no back-ups. I need to buy a flash disk thingy, like um, today.
Glad you’re back though. It’s awesome that Vaughan’s been getting you catering work! Hope to see you soon!
You’re better off avoiding the Genius-NOT Bar if you have a Mac-certified consultant handy. Apple’s standard operating procedure is that the GB will install only the latest operating system on restores or replaced hard drives. This can cause a problem with older software on your machine, thus, forcing you to upgrade other things = more $$$. I think it’s a scam that smacks of possible kickbacks. We’ve been through this scenario with the GB and so have 3 of our clients. Going to the GB is now my absolute last resort. As for backups, I use a 100GB external for manual backups when traveling with my laptop and a tape system with Retrospec in the office. Our back ups have saved our asses zillions of times. Just make sure you choose ‘archive’ instead of rewriting the tape each day/week. If you accidentally deleted something two weeks ago, you’ll still be able to recover it with an archive-type backup. Good luck!!
Eek, so sad to hear about your computer issues. Our hard drive died a few years back, and it really is hard to realize all your files are gone. What idiots at the Apple store, I tried to deal with the Geek Squad earlier in the year. They wanted to take my computer for a week and charge me 100 for what I had already told them what the problem was. ugh, idiots.
Hello!
I really like your blog and plan to put it in my ‘super-blogs list’ for all to see! yay! Hope this is OK. : )
My “clairebearspicnic.blogspot.com”, is just getting started and I am eager to feature other healthy living, vegan, food pages. Yours is a great addition.
Also, if you ever wanted to contribute recipes or other ‘stuff’ to my book, then I’d be delighted…. the ‘official invite’ is posted as a jpeg on the blog, or i can always e-mail you a pdf.
Thanks for your time,

Hey! If you are interested, there’s a vegetarian wine dinner at Circa downtown on Wed., Sept. 3.
It’s five courses, but only 3 are vegan (not dessert and not the flan). However, the chef told me vegans could have extra of repeat courses to make up. It’s $55 and you get a glass of organic wine with each course.
Vaughan and I are DEFINITELY going…let me know if you wanna come and we’ll make reservations for a bigger group. It’s kinda pricey but I wanna support Chef John Bragg for going out on a limb like this…plus, he’s serving Cassoulet with Mock Duck and White Beans.
Time to start telling you how much I miss you again.
