Hey, this is random and maybe just a little creepy, but I noticed that you're vegan and a Memphian, and I might be wrong, but I feel like those two things don't go together very often.

I'm working on my college campus in Minnesota right now, but I'm coming home to Germantown next weekend for three weeks and I'd like to get involved in whatever vegan/vegetarian activism/eating I can while home. (After five years of lacto-ovo, I made the switch to vegan a couple weeks ago.) I noticed that Food Awareness is going to have a meeting while I'm in town and I'll try to go to that. I emailed them to see if there was any other way I could get involved while in town but I haven't gotten a response yet.

Any more potlucks or anything?

I either reuse paper bags I got when I was more careless or use my backpack.

What are your thoughts on bananas?

Thanks!
Mike
mikhails dot email at gmail dot com

what a great challenge! i'm gonna have to check this out! i like the idea of no plastic bags (we quit a while ago, too! and i've gotten into the habit of bringing mine everywhere, as well as a container for my leftovers when we do dine out), and no bananas! i need to give up bananas, too! i bet you'll save some serious $ not dining out as much! wahoooooo!

and while they're still made from plastic - biobags (http://www.biobagusa.com/) makes trash bags that are biodegradable you can try for your trash (we love ours)! we also use their biodegradable bags for picking up doggie poos.

hmmmmm - now you've got me thinking about things i should give up, too! thanks! :D

I keep a bunch of canas bags in my car so I don't forget. Bananas would be tough, I love them in my smoothies. Good luck with the challenge!

Congrats on switching to no plastic/paper bags. I always have a canvas bag with me for quick stops and always a ton with me on major shopping day. It becomes second nature. I can't even remember the last time I had to deal with those awful plastic bags! Blech!

I do believe that if I ate out half as much as I do now per month...I would eat out like 1/2 a time a month....maybe almost 0 times a month then. Most I eat out a month is once. I prefer my own food, I know how it is prepared, who prepared it and that it is all organic. It is nice not to cook once in a while though, I'll give you that.

Way to go, I'm with Bianca on the plastic bags situation, but I do all my shopping with canvas bags. And I don't know about giving up banana's....

I'm not sure about Sunday yet, I may be on MIL duty. But i'll let you know soon.

Good challenges! Am I out of the loop about bananas? I love them so much, am I in denial about their harvesting or something?

Some stores, like Trader Joe's, have started putting signs on their doors saying "Did you remember your reusable bags?" or something to that effect. I find this tremendously helpful as I usually forget and leave mine in the car!

I'm with Bianca, though, in that I still use some plastic bags for sealing up diapers before throwing them out (I know, I know, disposable diapers is another way I'm killing the earth). I've given up lots of stuff in my life, but some plastics are so difficult to part ways with!

Good luck with all your challenges and keep us posted as to how you're doing!

I wish I could quit using plastic bags, but I need them to pick up my doggie poo! I use the canvas bags on grocery day, but when I run into a store for a quick something, I always accept the plastic...because I can't scoop up doo-doo with my hands....ick! I mean, I'm into the idea of a colonic, but that's my poo, not my dog's.

As for bananas, I could maybe do that for a month...not this month. Maybe next.
