Cake or death?

For anyone who doesn’t know, I happen to enjoy decorating cakes and spend many nights and weekends indulging this hobby/business. I have a website here if you’re interested (and if you’re wondering, yes I make vegan cakes too).

The reason I mention this is because yesterday evening I attended a meeting of the local cake club – just a bunch of women (and sometimes a couple of men) who enjoy baking and decorating cakes. They had a demo of different techniques and just general discussion as well. It was more fun than I expected it to be, honestly.

They were serving a meal, so I let them know in advance that I would be bringing my own food. I got quite a few friendly questions when everyone else started chowing down on pork, cheesy potatoes and green beans cooked with bacon (seriously, what is the southern tendancy to cook vegetables in bacon grease all about?), and I pulled out my PB&J with Terra chips, soy yogurt and a banana. The caterer asked why I brought my own food, and when I told her I was a vegan she said “Well, that’s okay, I love you anyway”. She then spent the rest of the evening referring to me as “my little vegan”, which is funny, because I’m not really little at all.

Oh yes, and I tried peach soy yogurt this time, it was pretty awesome.

Sunday (I know, I’m three days behind) I made lemon corn waffles from Vegan with a Vengeance, but I didn’t make the blueberry sauce because I’m lazy. I used whole wheat pastry flour instead of all purpose. I drizzled a little pure maple syrup over them and spread on some raspberry jam – they were delish.

I made super-yummy tacos Monday and have been eating the leftovers for lunch. I will try to take pics today before I devour them so I can post them tomorrow. See? Something to look forward to.

How very cool. I love that you are in a cake club and a vegan club. You are doing so well. Good for you for being so on it and organized to bring your own food.

That’s so cool that there’s a local cake club?! Who knew? I’m about to check out your cake site, but I wanted to comment first.

The waffles look delish. I’ve been eyeing that recipe for some time. I’ll have to try it now. And isn’t it cool how whole wheat pastry flour tastes just as great (or better) than all-pupose?

As for Follow Your Heart cheese, they have it at Wild Oats in Monterey Jack, Cheddar, and Mozzerella. It’s my favorite brand, but they also carry Vegan Rella and Galaxy Foods brand vegan cheese. As far as I know, Wild Oats is the only place that sells vegan cheese around here. :-(

Your cakes are amazing! I really admire anyone who can decorate a cake… I certainly can’t!

Hey Steph – thanks for answering me so quickly yesterday on the vegan/vegetarian thing. One more question – what do you do for protein?

Also, your blog name cracks me up! How did you come up with that name!

You’re cakes look FANTASTIC!!! Just like the ones on Ace of Cakes on the Food Network…one of my favorite shows!

I’ve never decorated. In fact, I just got into baking recently. But I’m loving it now. It looks like a lot of fun…when does the group meet? And is that fondant stuff vegan?

Good for you for bringing your own food. For some reason I didn’t expect it to be peanut butter and jelly, though. Had the brussel sprouts, loved ‘em.

But they did sort of smell up the house. My kids were like, “What’s that smell, when we got home from school.”

What do you use in a vegan cake instead of eggs?

It opened on Saturday…you must go there! It was so good! I think Food Awareness should plan our next dining outing there. I’ll talk to Vaughan about it.

BTW, the location is really ghetto. But it has that hole-in-the-wall diner feel. Which, I think, makes it even better.
